Apple Provides MacBook Pro and Mac Mini with M2 Pro and M2 Max SoC
Apple quietly released the first products of 2023. They are the next versions of the Macbook Pro 14, Macbook Pro 16, and Mac Mini.
The Cupertino giant released new MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max processors and the Mac Mini with M2 and M2 Pro system-on-a-chips (SoCs).
Let’s look at the new M2 Pro and M2 Max processors from Apple.
Processors for Apple M2 Pro and M2 Max
The M2 Pro is made with a 5nm architecture and has 40 billion transistors, which is almost 20% more than the M1 Pro and twice as many as the M2.
M2 Pro has up to eight high-performance cores and four low-power cores. It is also said to have the company’s own Media Engine and a faster 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says that the 10-core CPU in M1 Pro is 20% slower than the CPU in M2 Pro.
The M2 Pro has a CPU with up to 12 cores and a GPU with up to 19 cores. It can store up to 32GB of data.
The bigger sibling, the M2 Max, is an improved version of the M2 Pro. It has up to 38 GPU cores and up to 1TB of storage. Graphics performance-wise, it is said to be 30% faster than the M1 Max.
M2 Max also has the faster 16-core Neural Engine and the company’s own Media Engine, which can encode and decode HEVC, H.264, and ProRes videos faster than ever before. Customers can choose between configurations with 10 cores or 12 cores.
Details about the MacBook Pro 14 and 16 Pro
Before we start, let’s get the basics out of the way. Just like the Air, the MacBook Pro has two different screen sizes: 14 inches and 16 inches.
So, the Macbook 14 has a 14.2-inch Liquid Retina display XDR with a resolution of 3024 x 1964, while the 16-inch has a resolution of 3456 x 2234. It has a refresh rate of 120 Hz, and the screen is 100% P3 color gamut and 1000 nits bright. Both Macbooks come with macOS Ventura already installed.
As for ports, both the 14-inch and 16-inch Macbook Pro have three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an SDXC card slot, HDMI video output, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. There is also a webcam with a resolution of 1080p, a sound system with six speakers, and support for Wi-Fi 6E. This is the first MacBook to support 8K displays.
Apple says that the Macbook Pro models: will have the longest battery life of any MacBook, at up to 22 hours. Depending on the configuration that the user chooses, the Macbook Pro offers 67W, 96W, and 140W USB Type C charging with a detachable Magsafe 3 cable.
The 14-inch Pro model is 15.5mm thick and weighs up to 1.63kg, while the 16-inch Pro model is 16.8mm thick and weighs up to 2.18 kg.
